Many leave bags in the open at public swimming pools

They cite habit, hassle among reasons for not utilising lockers

Despite lockers available at public swimming pools here, many still choose to leave their belongings in the open. This observation was made at four swimming pools The Straits Times visited over three days, with bags seen left on ledges, deck chairs and steps.

At Sengkang Swimming Complex on a weekday evening, only 35 of the 60 lockers were in use, and more than 10 bags were left unattended.

Lockers at the Yio Chu Kang, Hougang and Toa Payoh pools were also under-utilised. These four facilities were among 11 pools islandwide targeted by three men aged 21 and 22 for three weeks last month.

Three suspects have been arrested and charged with theft. They allegedly stole items such as cellphones and wallets, taking them from bags left unattended at these facilities. If convicted, they could be fined, jailed for up to three years, or both.
