More Home Team NS personnel to be involved in frontline work

More national service personnel from the Home Team will be involved in front-line work as the enlistee pool is set to shrink due Singapore's declining population.

More full-time national servicemen and reservists from the police force will be doing groundwork, such as patroling and attending to cases, as opposed to administrative or support roles. Those from the Singapore Civil Defence Force will be trained and deployed in marine fire-fighting and rescue operations.

Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean made the announcement at a Home Team awards ceremony this evening to honour outstanding NSmen, and employers who have been supportive of their NSmen.

The number of enlistees are expected to fall by 2 per cent annually from 2016 because of the declining birthrate.
