Olympians feted at ceremony, medallists get cash

It was a dinner to honour the athletes who represented Singapore at the Olympics last month. But the 23 members of the London contingent got more than they bargained for last night - entry into an exclusive "club" called Olympians Singapore.

And on hand to welcome them were some of the nation's most fabled sporting names: Footballer Chia Boon Leong (1948 London), athlete C. Kunalan (1964 Tokyo and 1968 Mexico City) and weightlifter Tan Howe Liang (1960 Rome).

Olympians Singapore is an organisation set up in 2009 that aims to promote the Olympic values of respect, excellence and friendship.

Each of the 23 members of the London contingent received an Olympians Singapore medal - personalised with their names and sport engraved on it - and a lapel pin given by the International Olympic Committee to participants of the 30th modern Summer Games.
