11,000 households to take part in household expenditure survey

Some 11,000 households have been selected by the Singapore Department of Statistics (DOS) to take part in its 10th Household Expenditure Survey starting on Monday.

The year-long survey - conducted once every five years - collects information such as a household's consumption, income, savings and socio- economic characteristics.

It is mandatory for households, selected randomly to give a representative slice of Singapore, to take part in the survey but all information provided is confidential, the agency said.

This data will be used to update the basket of goods and services needed in compiling the Consumer Price Index, to reflect consumers' spending habits over time. It will also be used in the formulation of public policies, said DOS on Tuesday.
