Van driver jailed, banned over death of cyclist
A hit-and-run driver who drove while under suspension was jailed for six months and banned from driving for seven years on Tuesday for causing the death of a cyclist and other offences.
Patrick Parthipan Nadarajan, 44, was driving along Keng Lee Road towards Bukit Timah Road when his van hit cyclist Tham Poh Yau, 58, on Feb 12 last year. Mr Tham, a hawker, was flung from his bicycle and pronounced dead at the scene a few minutes later, after 7am.
The court heard that Parthipan stopped his van near the junction of Hertford Road farther ahead, and walked back to the place of collision for a short while before getting back into his vehicle and driving off.
Two passengers on a bus saw what happened and decided to check on the cyclist. They also saw that the left portion of the van's front windscreen was shattered. Subsequently, Parthipan called a mechanic and told him to replace his windscreen, saying he had been involved in an accident.
