Safety checks targeted at crane operations net 31 errant companies

Three people died as a result of crane accidents in the first half of this year - one more than during the same period last year.

Since 2007, the number of crane accidents had been on the rise - and the Manpower Ministry is concerned.

A recent series of safety checks targeted at crane operations in worksites netted 31 errant companies, which were each fined between $200 and $6,200.

The Manpower Ministry said on Monday morning that the checks - codenamed "Operation Hornbill" - was the first major enforcement exercise since the enactment of the Workplace Safety and Health (Operation of Cranes) Regulations in September 2011.
