Rare violin 'to be returned' to renowned Japanese musician

(THE YOMIURI SHIMBUN/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - A Guarneri violin belonging to a renowned Japanese musician living in Belgium will be returned to her unconditionally after it was confiscated by customs authorities at Frankfurt Airport on Aug 16, according to sources.

The violin, hand-carried by Ms Yuzuko Horigome, 54, was seized when she arrived at the airport on her way to Brussels from Tokyo on Aug 16, as she was not carrying a document proving she owns the instrument.

The customs authorities demanded a duty payment of 190,000 euros (S$302,100), equivalent to 19 per cent of the violin's estimated value.

As it was confirmed upon further investigation that Ms Horigome is the violin's owner, authorities are likely to return it free of duty.
