Myanmar activists' passports finally ready after 6-month wait

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) - Myanmar's government has agreed to grant passports to activists who complained they had not been issued despite applying months ago.

Activist Soe Tun said on Wednesday that police informed his political group that applications made by 16 members five to six months ago have been approved.

Passports in Myanmar are generally issued within three weeks. Three group members who received passports last week publicly protested the delay in their colleagues' cases.

The action came two days after about 90 political detainees were released in an amnesty. Rights groups believe several hundred remain imprisoned.
