Woman, 88, found mentally fit to defend claim over $20m house

An 88-year-old woman locked in a legal battle with her husband over a $20 million bungalow has been allowed to carry on personally defending the suit.

Madam Chan Yuen Lan is mentally capable of instructing her lawyers, the High Court found. This means there is no need to appoint a representative to act on her behalf.

Madam Chan is being sued by her husband of 55 years, Mr See Fong Mun. The 85-year-old businessman claims that he is the true owner of the Chancery Lane bungalow.

It was bought in 1983 in the sole name of Madam Chan, who has little education, speaks only Cantonese and worked as a hairdresser before her marriage.
