Clubs urged to join anti-binge drinking campaign

HPB wants bar staff to help promote sensible drinking among the young

To discourage binge drinking among young partygoers, the Health Promotion Board (HPB) is turning to an unlikely place for help: Nightclubs.

It wants to persuade at least six clubs to join its anti-binge drinking campaign by 2015.

Those that agree will send their bartenders, bouncers, and waiters to a free half-day course that will teach them how to identify signs of excessive drinking. The idea is that these trained staff will coax customers to stop if they feel they have had too much to drink.

So far, only one nightspot, Zirca in Clarke Quay, has agreed to take part in the effort; about 50 Zirca staff members will attend the course next month.
