Strong earthquake hits central Indonesia, no casualties reported

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) - A magnitude 6.5 earthquake has hit parts of Java island and the tourist resort of Bali, but there are no immediate reports of damages or casualties.

Indonesia's Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said the earthquake that struck at 1.23am on Tuesday (2.23am, Singapore time) was centred beneath the Indian Ocean, but has no potential to trigger tsunami.

It was centred about 300km south-west of Banyuangi town on the eastern end of Java, with a depth of 10km.

Mr Setio Aji, an agency's official said the earthquake was strongly felt in Bali, while residents in some East Java cities told El Shinta radio they were awakened by the tremor.
