Supercar shines

Final tweaks to the McLaren MP4-12C make the sportscar even more brilliant

McLaren employs hundreds of brilliant engineers, designers and test-drivers, but maybe what it really needs is a weatherman.

When Life! tested the long-awaited McLaren MP4-12C sportscar earlier this year in Portugal, it poured. We had a second go at it recently at the Dunsfold Aerodrome (better known as the Top Gear test track) near McLaren's headquarters in Woking, England. It stayed dry all morning and over lunch, but as we pulled up to the airfield in the afternoon for our test-drive, the heavens opened.

Rain is never welcome when you are trying out any new car, let alone a near-600bhp supercar with a 330kmh top speed. It was hard to tell who was more nervous as I climbed into the driving seat: me or the reluctant McLaren chaperone alongside.

The cabin is a friendly place, though. The scissor doors are a nice touch, making the car feel special right from the outset and also easing entry into this low-slung two-seater.
