Volleyball: Five Cuban national team players jailed for rape in Finland during World League event

HELSINKI (AFP) - Five members of Cuba's national volleyball team were jailed on Tuesday in Finland for a rape that took place during a Volleyball World League tournament in July, a district court said.

The 27-year-old team captain, Rolando Cepeda Abreu, as well as Abrahan Alfonso Gavilan, 21; Ricardo Calvo Manzano, 19; and Osmany Uriarte Mestre, 21, were handed five-year prison sentences for aggravated rape, while their team-mate Luis Sosa Sierra, 21, received a shorter sentence of three years and six months.

A sixth player, Dariel Albo Miranda, 24, was acquitted of the same charge.

None of them featured at last month's Rio Olympics, where Cuba finished last in their pool with five straight defeats.
