SINGAPORE -In May last year, just a month before the qualifiers for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games (YOG), national triathlete Herlene Yu was competing in Hong Kong when her bicycle hit a curb as she was going downhill.

She was sent flying into a lamp post, and as she lay motionless on the ground in excruciating pain, her only thought was on missing out on the YOG.
