The pair of Zimbabwean Cara Black and India's Sania Mirza won the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore doubles title on Sunday afternoon in emphatic style, thrashing defending champions Peng Shuai and Hsieh Su-wei 6-1, 6-0 to lift the trophy.

Black and Mirza, teaming up to play the prestigious year-ender for the first time, were the sharper and more aggressive of the two pairs and were never troubled by Peng and Hsieh. They win US$500,000 (S$637,700) and the Martina Navratilova trophy, while the runners-up take home US$250,000.

En route to the final, Black and Mirza had survived several match points in their semi-final and quarter-final matches. Both pairs, however, will be splitting up after the event, with Hsieh incidentally teaming up with Mirza next season.

Said Mirza: "We were down match point in our first match, but that's tennis - it gives you another chance to fight. We're here today, and we won the tournament. It's been an amazing ride and journey with Cara. The crowd here has been amazing. As an Asian, for me to be here with two other Asians in Singapore, I hope this does so much more for Asian tennis. It's been a pleasure to be here."

Added Peng: "I wished that we could have played better. It feels like home when I play in Singapore so I hope that next year I can come back."
