LONDON • Andy Murray claimed his second Wimbledon tennis title with a clinical straight-sets victory over Milos Raonic yesterday.

Cheered to the rafters by a jubilant Centre Court crowd and by the thousands glued to the big screen outside No. 1 Court, the Scot tamed the big-serving Canadian 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-2) in 2hr 47min to claim the third Grand Slam crown of his career.

Under the approving gaze of his coach, Ivan Lendl, Murray, whose 2013 victory at the All England Club ended a 77-year wait for a British men's singles champion, capitalised on the relative inexperience of the sixth-seeded Raonic to control the match from start to finish.

Murray fashioned a decisive break at 3-3 in the opening set as Raonic netted a forehand volley.

The Canadian continued to live dangerously on serve, saving a break point in the opening game of the second set and repeating the feat in the seventh and ninth games.

But a poor start to the second-set tie-breaker effectively put paid to his challenge, Murray racing away with the decider for the loss of just three points.

The third set followed a familiar pattern, as again Murray took control in the tie-break after neither player could manage a break of serve.

The victory continued a remarkable run of success by the Scot under the guidance of Lendl, whom he welcomed back to his coaching team at Queen's Club four weeks ago. In their first spell together, which ended in March 2014, Murray won the US Open, Wimbledon and Olympic titles.

"The most important tournament for me every year. I've had some great moments here and some tough losses. I'm glad to get my hands on the trophy again.

"I played really good stuff but Milos has had a great few weeks on the grass and had some unbelievable wins. His match against Roger (Federer) was a great match," said Murray after the match.
