SINGAPORE - Table tennis player Yu Mengyu fell at the final hurdle at the Poland Open on Sunday night, losing 10-12, 9-11, 10-12, 7-11 to her teenage opponent, Miu Hirano from Japan.

The world No. 23 Singaporean had beaten the 16-year-old Japanese in their two previous encounters on the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) professional circuit, but was no match for an aggressive and confident Hirano in Warsaw.

Still, Yu can take heart from a positive campaign that led her to victories over two worthy opponents. She beat Japan's world No. 4 Kasumi Ishikawa in the semi-finals, beating an opponent she had failed to upset in almost four years. Yu also beat South Korea's top paddler, world No. 12 Seo Hyo Won in the Round of 16.

Yu is expected to qualify for the Olympic Games through her world ranking. She is currently No. 14 on the ITTF's Olympic singles ranking, with the top 22 next month making the cut.

The team will compete next in the Asian Cup in Dubai.
