Table Tennis: Feng Tianwei upset by unranked Japanese opponent in Croatia

SINGAPORE - World No. 6 Feng Tianwei suffered a huge upset in the second round of the International Table Tennis Federation Zagreb Open on Thursday (early Friday morning SG time), losing to an unranked opponent.

The Singaporean, who was second seed, was beaten 11-9, 5-11, 11-9, 8-11, 11-7, 9-11, 11-9 in a see-saw battle by Japan's Marina Matsuzawa.

Team-mates Zhou Yihan and Lin Ye also failed to get past their respective opponents.

Zhou Yihan, the No. 50, was beaten 11-3, 11-7, 7-11, 7-11, 11-5, 7-11, 11-3 by Belarussian veteran Viktoria Pavlovich (No. 64).

World No. 76 Lin Ye, playing Romania's Elizabeta Samara (No. 38), was whitewashed 11-8, 11-8, 11-9, 11-6. She will, however, continue in the Under-21 event, facing Japanese sensation Mima Ito in the semi-finals.

World No. 41 Zeng Jian was the only one to earn a place in the third round. She beat Russia's No. 90 Yana Noskova 11-4, 11-7, 11-2, 9-11, 15-13 and will play top seed Ai Fukuhara of Japan next in the round of 16 later on Friday.
