Singapore's top paddler Feng Tianwei escaped early elimination at the Asian Cup after sweeping aside Japan's world No. 25 Sayaka Hirano with ease in a quarter-final play-off on Friday morning.

Feng won 11-5, 11-7, 11-6 in straight games to book a place in the last eight, after losing two out of her three group stage matches on Thursday in Wuhan, China.

The win has earned her a date with world No. 2 and Olympic silver medallist Ding Ning of China. Victory will be an uphill task, considering the Singapore world No. 7 has only triumphed in two out of 14 previous meetings. Their tie will take place on Friday afternoon.

Team-mate Yu Mengyu, ranked No. 23, will play South Korea's No. 19 Seok Ha Jung in her quarter-final.

The Asian Cup is the final tune-up for Singapore's paddlers before the World Team Table Tennis Championships take place in Tokyo next month.
