Swimming: Anderson wins women's 5km open water gold as world c'ships kick off in Kazan

KAZAN, Russia (AFP) - Haley Anderson of the United States won the women's 5km open water gold at the world aquatics championships in Kazan on Saturday.

The Olympic silver medallist over 10km timed 58min 48.4sec to edge out Greece's Kalliopi Araouzou into second place in 58:49.8.

The bronze went to Germany's Finnia Wunram, who clocked 58:51.0.

This was the first event of the championships, which run till Aug 9 and cover swimming, open water swimming, synchronised swimming, diving, high diving and water polo.
