Albirex Niigata were held to a 1-1 draw by Hougang United in last night's S-League match at Jalan Besar Stadium.

The Japanese side remain in second place in the 10-team league on 31 points, one behind leaders Brunei DPMM.


Valencia strengthen defence with Santos

MADRID • Valencia have agreed to sign Brazilian centre-back Aderlan Santos from Portuguese side Braga on a five-year contract.

Valencia, who needed to bolster their defence after they sold Argentina defender Nicolas Otamendi to Manchester City last week, reportedly paid €7.5 million (S$11.8 million) for the 26-year-old.

Rose faces gang-rape claims from ex-lover

CHICAGO • Derrick Rose, the 2011 National Basketball Association Most Valuable Player, is being sued by a former girlfriend who alleges he and two friends drugged and gang-raped her in 2013.

Rose's accuser, identified only as Jane Doe, said she and the three-time All-Star Chicago Bulls guard dated from 2011 to 2013.

Sailor blames Rio's polluted water for virus

BERLIN • German sailor Erik Heil, who was third at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic test event this month, is being treated for several infections which he says were caused by polluted waters during the regatta.

The Brazilian metropolis will host the 2016 summer Games but is struggling with polluted waters on which the sailors will compete.

Heil was told by his doctors in Berlin that he had been infected by multi-resistant germs.

Aussie Olympians face strict rules

SYDNEY • Australia's Olympic athletes must agree to having their bags and other possessions searched by team officials who yesterday introduced a new ban on sleeping drugs. The hardline stance comes in the wake of swimming great Grant Hackett seeking treatment last year for addiction to the prescription drug zolpidem, sold as Stilnox in Australia.
