Viernes hopes to net deal with Cup form

The Singapore Slingers will use the Sept 21-25 Merlion Cup to try out a potential signing - Jeff Viernes from the Philippines.

Head coach Neo Beng Siang said his line up to take on teams such as Yao Ming owned-Shanghai Sharks and Philippines Mighty Sports is not finalised yet, but relishes the opportunity for the Slingers to compete at a high level.

The Slingers will take on Kinmen Kaoliang Liquor in the opening game.


Lippi to sign record deal with Guangzhou

MILAN • Italian Marcello Lippi is set to return to Guangzhou Evergrande on a three-year, €60 million (S$ 91.1 million) deal which would make him the world's highest-paid football coach.

Lippi steered the Chinese giants to league titles in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

US Open match under investigation

NEW YORK • A first-round match at tennis' US Open between Vitalia Diatchenko and Timea Bacsinszky is being investigated for suspicious betting patterns.

The Tennis Integrity Unit said betting organisations had flagged the match played on Aug 30 as suspicious. Bacsinszky, the 15th seed, beat the Russian 6-1, 6-1.

Platini risks trouble to be at Congress

PARIS • Disgraced former Uefa president Michel Platini will attend next week's Uefa Congress in Athens at the invitation of European football's governing body, but paying his own way for a final farewell.

When asked if his appearance at the Congress could represent a breach of his ban, a Fifa spokesman said his participation "without prior request would be problematic".

Fifa propose fine in World Cup bid probe

ZURICH • Fifa's ethics committee has recommended former German Football Association secretary general Helmut Sandrock be fined 50,000 Swiss francs (S$69,511) following an investigation into the awarding of the 2006 World Cup to Germany.

Fifa's investigatory chamber called for him to perform "social work to be determined by the adjudicatory chamber" and to be fined for violations of Fifa's code of ethics.
