Thai golfer Tirawet Kaewsiribandit fired a three-under 69 yesterday to take sole possession of the lead at the US$100,000 (S$144,000) The Players Championship.

His 201 total at the Asian Development Tour event at the Raffles Country Club is a shot better than compatriot Itthipat Buranatanyarat (70).

Choo Tze Huang (66), joint 10th on 207, is the highest-placed Singaporean.


Hummel in 3-yearkit deal with Albirex

S-League football side Albirex Niigata yesterday announced a lucrative apparel sponsorship with Hummel.

The deal, worth an estimated $120,000, will see Hummel provide Albirex's kits for the next three seasons.

The reigning League Cup and Singapore Cup champions kick off their S-League campaign against defending champions Brunei DPMM in the league opener on Feb 13.

'Missile' back in business after op

MELBOURNE • Australia's former 100m freestyle world champion and Olympic silver medallist James Magnussen made a winning return to the pool yesterday, following a nine-month break owing to shoulder surgery.

The 24-year-old, nicknamed the Missile, won the event - his first serious test since his operation last May - at the Victorian Open swimming championships in 49.35 seconds.

Torres offered highest wages ever: Agent

LONDON • Fernando Torreshas an offer to become the highest-paid player in world football, his agent Jose Antonio Martin has said.

The striker is currently on loan at Atletico Madrid from Milan until the end of the season and Martin has called on the Atletico coach Diego Simeone to make his position on the Spaniard clear.

Torres, 31, has scored only two goals in 16 appearances this season but Martin believes Atletico fans want the player who began his career at the club to sign a permanent contract.
