Philippines seal 3rd DBS Marina Bay Cup

The Philippines beat Finland 2-0 to win their third DBS Marina Bay Cup, a match-racing sailing competition that was in its third edition.

The Sept 14-17 event featured eight teams including hosts Singapore in a round-robin format, before Finland beat Japan 2-0 while the Philippines beat Hungary 2-1 in the semi-finals. "For sure, we will be looking to win the title for a fourth time next year," said Filipino captain Ridgely Balladares.


Four-month layoff for Barca's Dembele

BARCELONA • Spanish football club Barcelona's record €105 million (S$168 million) signing Ousmane Dembele is set to be sidelined for up to four months after he ruptured the tendon in his left thigh against Getafe on Saturday.

The 20-year-old forward has made just three appearances for Barca since sealing his move from Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund last month.

Redknapp calls it a day after sacking

LONDON • Harry Redknapp believes his sacking as manager of second-tier English football club Birmingham City will finally bring the curtain down on his long career.

The 70-year-old Englishman - who numbers Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham among the clubs he has managed - left his post after just 13 games in charge following Saturday's 3-1 home defeat by Preston North End.

TOKYO • Japanese organisers were warned yesterday to accelerate their preparations for the 2019 Rugby World Cup, with training venues a key area of concern. Following the conclusion of evaluation meetings in Tokyo, tournament director Alan Gilpin was underwhelmed by the progress made with two years to go before the sport's showpiece competition comes to Asia for the first time.
