Perez to remain at Real helm until 2021

MADRID • Florentino Perez will remain as president of Real Madrid until 2021 after no other candidates ran against him, the Spanish champions announced yesterday.

It will be the third term for the 70-year-old construction magnate who has spent 15 years at the helm of Europe's most successful club from 2000-2006 and since 2009. Under Perez, Real have won three Champions League titles in four seasons. The club - which also won LaLiga last season - lead the way in the elite European competition with 12 trophies.

Vekic upsets Konta in Nottingham final

NOTTINGHAM • Donna Vekic ruined Johanna Konta's bid to win her first title on home soil as the Croatian beat the British No. 1 in the Nottingham Open final on Sunday.

Konta took the first set, but the world No. 8 could not seal the silverware in the second set tie-break and eventually slumped to a 2-6, 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 loss.

The 26-year-old's failure to land her first grass-court title is a setback ahead of Wimbledon, which gets under way next month.

Lewis dismisses McGregor's chances

LOS ANGELES • Hall of Fame boxer Lennox Lewis will not be spending his money on the Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor fight, saying he "can't take it serious" because the outcome is too predictable.

The retired former three-time world heavyweight champion said the combination of Mayweather's boxing experience and hand speed will be too much to handle for McGregor, who has made his name as a mixed martial arts fighter for the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

470-strong field for Vietnam at Games

HANOI • Vietnam will be sending 470 athletes to the SEA Games to vie for medals at 28 out of 32 sport events, in the hope of finishing among the top three countries in the medal standings.

Among the 60 golds that Vietnam are aiming to win at the Aug 19-30 Kuala Lumpur Games, 10 are expected to come from its top swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien, who won eight golds at the 2015 Games in Singapore.

The Vietnamese athletes are also expected to win golds in shooting and athletics as well as martial arts events.
