Pellegrini deal keeps him at City until 2017

LONDON • Manchester City have confirmed that manager Manuel Pellegrini has extended his contract at the English football club until June 2017.

The Chilean's current deal was due to expire at the end of the coming season, with speculation that Bayern Munich's Pep Guardiola was being lined up as his replacement.

10-year-old Bahraini competes in slow lane

KAZAN (Russia) • Pint-sized Bahraini Alzain Tareq set an unlikely new record at swimming's World Championships yesterday.

The 10-year-old became the youngest-ever competitor to race at the World Championships when she competed in the heats of the women's 50m butterfly.

She finished last among the 64 competitors, reaching the end of the pool in 41.13sec, almost 16 seconds behind the leading qualifiers.

Shobukhova dope ban extended, loses titles

MOSCOW • Russia's Liliya Shobukhova has been stripped of her London and Chicago marathon titles after the International Association of Athletics Federation said that all her results since 2009 had been annulled and her two- year doping ban extended by 14 months.

The 37-year-old, who was in a German documentary which alleged systematic doping by Russian athletes, was originally suspended after irregularities were detected in her biological passport.

China to host 2019 basketball World Cup

TOKYO• China has won the right to host the 2019 basketball World Cup, beating the Philippines in yesterday's vote in Tokyo. The sport's international ruling body Fiba chose the basketball-mad nation following a presentation by the country's delegation, helped by former National Basketball Association star Yao Ming.
