Opening win at AFC Women's Asian Cup

Midfielder Lim Li Xian scored the 81st-minute winner, as Singapore edged out Syria 1-0 last night in the opening game of their 2018 AFC Women's Asian Cup Group D qualifiers.

Singapore next play Iran tomorrow. Their other opponents are hosts Vietnam and Myanmar.

The group winners will go to the finals in Jordan.


Dos Anjos on the fight card for UFC S'pore

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) have announced that former lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos will make his welterweight debut at UFC Fight Night Singapore against Belgium's Tarec Saffiedine.

In another bout that was revealed by the UFC, Japanese flyweight fighter Naoki Inoue will square off against Carls John de Tomas of the Philippines. Tickets for UFC Fight Night Singapore will go on sale on April 13 at www.sportshubtix.sg.


Hungry Chong Wei has World C'ships in mind

KUCHING • After a brilliant start to the year, Malaysia's 34-year-old badminton icon Lee Chong Wei said yesterday he still has plenty of firepower as he aims for an elusive title at the World Championships in August in Glasgow, Scotland.

The world No. 1, who captured the All-England Open last month, is primed to retain his Malaysia Open title this week.

Carberry beats cancer to make cricket return

LONDON • Former England opener Michael Carberry enjoyed a fairy-tale return to cricket following his battle with cancer, scoring a century for English side Hampshire in their pre-season tie versus Cardiff MCCU in Southampton.

The 36-year-old left-hander, who was diagnosed with a cancerous tumour last July, scored 100 off 121 balls at the Rose Bowl on Sunday, prompting a standing ovation.

LONDON • David Moyes says he "deeply regrets" threatening to slap a female reporter after the match against Burnley on March 18 and saying: "Careful the next time you come in."

The Sunderland manager was addressing BBC Newcastle reporter Vicki Sparks after she interviewed him following the 0-0 draw at home against Burnley last month.

LONDON • Manchester City's quest to enlarge its global footprint and find new stars has led to the English Premier League side signing a 10-year accord with a little-known Uruguayan club.

The pact means City will take control of Club Atletico Torque for a longer period than the club has been around.
