Messi out because of groin strain
BUENOS AIRES • Argentina football captain Lionel Messi will miss Tuesday's 2018 World Cup qualifier away to Venezuela with a groin problem, national team coach Edgardo Bauza said on Friday.
"Unfortunately, he won't be able to play. We can't take any risks. We spoke with the doctor and it's the sensible thing to do," Bauza told reporters.
Messi made a triumphant return after his short-lived international retirement by scoring the winning goal in Thursday's 1-0 victory over Uruguay in Mendoza.
Schweini omitted from Europa list
LONDON • Out-of-favour Manchester United footballer Bastian Schweinsteiger has been left out of the club's squad for the Europa League group stage.
The 32-year-old has yet to make an appearance under manager Jose Mourinho despite being in United's Premier League squad. He will now be ineligible to play in Europe after being excluded from the 27-man list submitted to Uefa yesterday.
Day's family safe despite accident
BOSTON • World No. 1 golfer Jason Day's wife and children escaped injury after being involved in a traffic accident, a statement said on Friday.
Day's wife Ellie, children Dash and Lucy and a friend were in a car when it was hit by a bus. They were taken to hospital as a precaution but later released. "Thankfully everyone is now resting comfortably," Day said, after he had carded a one-under 70 in the opening round at the Deutsche Bank Championship.
