McIlroy two strokes behind in Dubai

DUBAI • Defending champion Rory McIlroy carded a four-under 68 yesterday to be among the top of the leader board after the first round of the Dubai Desert Classic.

The world No. 2 mixed six birdies with two bogeys and is two strokes behind the clubhouse leader Alex Noren of Sweden.

Noren posted six birdies in a blemish-free 66, leading Spaniard Rafael Cabrera-Bello, Australian Brett Rumford and South African Trevor Fisher Jr by a stroke.


Del Potro to make return next week

BUENOS AIRES • Former US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro announced another comeback on Wednesday after almost a year out with a left-wrist injury.

The 27-year-old former world No. 4, who won the US Open in 2009, used social media to announce he would be returning to the circuit at Delray Beach next week.

Kobayashi to join endurance race

PARIS • Former Formula One driver Kamui Kobayashi will replace the retired Alex Wurz for the Toyota Gazoo Racing team in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) competition that includes the fabled Le Mans race, the Japanese car manufacturer announced.

Kobayashi, who steps up from test and reserve driver, will race alongside Stephane Sarrazin and Mike Conway in the completely new TS050 hybrid car.

ICC to review "Big Three" change

DUBAI • The International Cricket Council (ICC) decided yesterday to stage a complete review of the constitutional changes which gave the major powers and revenues to Australia, England and India two years ago.

The changes were opposed by some member countries then, which threatened a divide in the body. The ICC board meeting which finished yesterday announced there would be a review of the "Big Three" change.

Pereira banned for 8 matches

BUENOS AIRES • Uruguay defender Alvaro Pereira's hopes of making his Getafe debut in La Liga have been dashed by an eight-match ban imposed by the Argentinian FA (AFA).

Pereira is one of 15 players the AFA has sanctioned for their part in a brawl at the end of a friendly between Gimnasia and Estudiantes, the club he has left to join Getafe on loan.
