Injured Leonard to sit out Spurs' pre-season

NEW YORK • San Antonio Spurs All-Star forward Kawhi Leonard will miss the entire NBA pre-season due to a right thigh injury.

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich indicated the issue developed some time last season, and the team said that Leonard's timeline for returning to the court would be determined at a later date as he "continues a rehabilitation programme for right thigh tendinopathy".


Lille owner pins blame on Amiens for injuries

AMIENS (France) • The owner of French top-flight football club Lille hit back at his rival at Amiens SC yesterday, suggesting safety lapses were to blame for the collapse of a stadium barrier which left 29 fans injured during a game between the teams.

The chairman of Amiens, Bernard Joannin, initially blamed hundreds of "hardcore fans" among Lille supporters for the shocking scenes during Saturday's Ligue 1 encounter in Amiens, north-east France.

BERLIN • Shinji Kagawa became the all-time top Japanese scorer in the German Bundesliga when he chipped in the winner in Borussia Dortmund's nervous 2-1 victory at Augsburg on Saturday.

He scored his 38th goal in the football league to surpass Leicester forward Shinji Okazaki.


Grandfather spurs Green to 1st Tour win

TAIPEI • Malaysian golfer Gavin Green said the spirit of his late grandfather was with him as he finally claimed his first Asian Tour title at the Taiwan Masters after three runner-up finishes this year.

The 23-year-old Green carded a one-under 71 in the final round yesterday for 279 and a two-shot win over a group including overnight leader Juvic Pagunsan (74) of the Philippines.


Baldwin learns harsh lesson after lion bite

LONDON • Wales hooker Scott Baldwin apologised to Ospreys supporters with one of the most unusual excuses for missing his club's Guinness Pro14 rugby union match against the Cheetahs on Friday - he was bitten by a lion.

Baldwin had been warned not to put his hand in the lion's enclosure near Bloemfontein in South Africa, but ignored the sage advice from his coach and the 29-year old was bitten after trying to pet the animal.
