Greater green focus for S'pore runners

Chinese invest in City's parent firm

LONDON • A consortium of Chinese investors has bought a 13 per cent stake in Manchester City's parent company for US$400 million (S$564.7 million).

China Media Capital and Citic Capital have purchased the stake in City Football Group (CFG), just weeks after Chinese President Xi Jinping visited the club.

The deal is part of the CFG's strategy of expanding into Chinese football and reflects Xi's aim to turn his country into a "football powerhouse".

PM says Benzema should not play

PARIS • Karim Benzema should not be called up to the France squad, French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said yesterday.

"If a minister was under formal investigation, they would not be in the government. In a way, it's the same for the France team," he added.

Real Madrid striker Benzema was put under formal judicial investigation last month in connection with an alleged attempt to blackmail Mathieu Valbuena with a sex video.

Heart attack claims Russian athlete, 22

MOSCOW • The 2015 World Championship modern pentathlon silver medallist Alexander Kukarin has died after suffering a heart attack.

The 22-year-old Russian died on Thursday while staying at a Moscow hotel, according to the Russian Modern Pentathlon Federation.

Day-night Tests to gain more traction

ADELAIDE • Cricket Australia said yesterday they will schedule more day-night Test matches following the success of the recent trial against New Zealand staged under lights in Adelaide.

A total attendance of 123,736 fans over three days at the Adelaide Oval, along with 3.19 million prime-time viewers watching free-to-air television coverage on Sunday's final day, confirmed the strong acceptance of the day-night Test played with a pink ball, CA chief executive James Sutherland said.

Del Neri is new Verona coach

MILAN • Struggling Italian Serie A football club Verona yesterday named Luigi del Neri as their new coach 24 hours after the sacking of Andrea Mandorlini.

The former Inter Milan defender was dismissed with his team bottom of the league and without a win so far this season.
