Atletico on a roll with 3-0 win over Sevilla

MADRID • Atletico Madrid maintained their perfect start to the Spanish La Liga football season as goals from Koke, Gabi and Jackson Martinez earned an impressive 3-0 win at Sevilla on Sunday.

Sevilla were beaten at home only once last season.

Elsewhere, Valencia are still looking for their first win of the league season after being held 1-1 at home by Deportivo La Coruna.

Shelvey earns England recall

LONDON • Jonjo Shelvey was recalled and Jamie Vardy retained his place in the England football squad announced on Sunday for the forthcoming 2016 European Championship qualifiers against San Marino and Switzerland.

Midfielder Shelvey, 23, won his only cap against San Marino three years ago and has been called up again by manager Roy Hodgson after some impressive performances for Swansea City.

Vardy, 28, made his England debut in a friendly against the Republic of Ireland in June.

Di Maria makes assist in short PSG debut

PARIS • Angel di Maria made his debut as a second-half substitute as French champions Paris Saint-Germain maintained their perfect start to the season with a 3-0 win at Monaco on Sunday.

The Argentina winger played his first 24 minutes for the Parisians following a €63 million (S$99 million) move from Manchester United, and set up PSG's last goal for Ezequiel Lavezzi, after Edinson Cavani had notched a brace.

India closing in on victory in Sri Lanka

COLOMBO • Fired-up India eyed their first series win in Sri Lanka for 22 years when the home team's top order collapsed during the decisive final Test in Colombo yesterday.

Sri Lanka, set a tough victory target of 386, lost three wickets for 21 runs before moving to 67 without further loss by stumps on a tense fourth day at the Sinhalese Sports Club.

Veteran Tamulis earns maiden win

PRATTVILLE (Alabama) • Kris Tamulis, a 10-year LPGA veteran, rallied from three shots back on Sunday to lift her first golf Tour title at the Yokohama Tire LPGA Classic.

The American fired eight birdies in a seven-under par 65, her 17-under total of 271 giving her a one-stroke victory over former world No. 1 Tseng Ya-ni and third-round leader Austin Ernst.

Midfielder Garcia joins Athletic Bilbao

MADRID • Spain midfielder Raul Garcia has joined Athletic Bilbao from Atletico Madrid after both clubs reached an agreement yesterday.

Garcia was a key player, scoring 17 goals as Atletico Madrid won the La Liga and reached the Champions League final in 2014.

However, he was not expected to feature heavily for Atletico Madrid this season after the arrivals of Jackson Martinez, Luciano Vietto and Yannick Ferreira Carrasco at the Vicente Calderon during the summer.
