Another Brazilian coach in China

BEIJING • Former Brazil manager Mano Menezes has been hired by Chinese side Shandong Luneng as coach, the club said - the third former boss of the South American giants to find a role in the Asian country.

Menezes, 53, joins World Cup winner Luiz Felipe Scolari, who is in charge of Chinese and Asian champions Guangzhou Evergrande, in the Chinese Super League. Vanderlei Luxemburgo also took over at China League One side Tianjin Quanjian in September.

Lin out of badminton Finals in Dubai

DUBAI • Badminton legend Lin Dan will miss the World Super Series Finals in Dubai, scheduled from tomorrow to Sunday.

The 32-year-old had just won the men's singles title at the Olympics test event held in Rio de Janeiro on Nov 29. An e-mail from the Badminton World Federation explained that he withdrew because of an injury and the vacancy will be filled by his Chinese compatriot Tian Houwei.

Cheyenne qualifies for LPGA Tour again

DAYTONA BEACH (Florida) • Cheyenne Woods, the niece of 14-time Major champion Tiger Woods, was among 20 players to qualify for golf's 2016 LPGA Tour after Sunday's final round of the five-day qualifying event.

By tying for 13th on six-under 354 after a closing 69, she kept her card. The 25-year-old made only eight of 17 cuts this year in her rookie LPGA campaign to finish 125th on the money list.

F1 boring because of Mercedes: Bernie

BERLIN • Mercedes' world championship stranglehold has made Formula One "boring" and caused spectators to turn their backs on the sport, commercial ringmaster Bernie Ecclestone told Welt am Sonntag on Sunday.

Mercedes have swept to the last two F1 world titles with Lewis Hamilton taking back-to-back drivers' crowns.

Benzema unworried by possible fallout

LONDON • France and Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema has denied that he fears missing the European Championship on home turf and dismissed accusations that he spat during the singing of the French national anthem before last month's Clasico.

Facing charges of conspiracy to blackmail relating to an extortion scam, Benzema is suspected of having played an active role in the plot and accused of putting pressure on his team-mate Mathieu Valbuena to deal directly with the blackmailers.

Clarke chooses Poulter, Westwood

KUALA LUMPUR • European captain Darren Clarke added some formidable golf matchplay experience to his EurAsia Cup line-up yesterday, when he named English Ryder Cup veterans Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood as his captain's picks.

The decision rounds out the 12-man European squad for the Jan 15-17 team event in Malaysia.
