Sports Hub celebrates 1-year anniversary with 7-week Opening Season events

SINGAPORE - The Singapore Sports Hub launched the June 5-July 26 Opening Season on Friday evening, in a ceremony graced by Mr Lawrence Wong, Minister for Culture, Community, and Youth.

The Opening Season is a seven-week period of community and world-class events to inaugurate the Sports Hub's one-year milestone, with major events such as the June 5-16 SEA Games and the July 15-18 Barclays Asia Trophy.

At the launch, Mr Wong sealed two items in a time capsule. The first was a special edition SEA Games gold-medal plaque with a quote from Singapore's first Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew that read: "Sports must occupy a large place in our national activities... every citizen must keep himself fit if he wants to lead an effective life."

The second was a book depicting the birth of the Singapore Sports Hub. The time capsule will be commissioned by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the Youth Celebrate! event on July 26.

Besides commending the Sports Hub for hosting a wide spectrum of events over the past year, Mr Wong added: "The Sports Hub has also become home to many athletes who now train here regularly. More importantly, it has become a popular destination for Singaporeans to watch and play sports with their fiends and families."
