SINGAPORE - Singapore's swimmers started their SEA Games campaign on a positive note, winning two golds, two silvers, and two bronzes in six events on Day One of the swimming meet.
Quah Zheng Wen led the charge for the Republic at the OCBC Aquatic Centre, clinching one gold and one silver in his two races. He beat Indonesia's backstroke specialist I Gede Siman Sudartawa in the 100m back, touching home in a Games and national record time of 54.51sec.
Siman was second in 55.60sec, while Vietnam's Tran Duy Khoi finished third in 56.31sec.
Quah also finished second in the 200m free with a new national record time of 1:49.17 but he was pipped to the wall by Vietnam's Hoang Quy Phuoc.
Singapore's women's 4x100m free relay team added another gold, winning in 3:46.60. Thailand were second in 3:49.62, while Indonesia were third in 3:53.18.
In the men's 200m breaststroke, Lionel Khoo finished second in a national record time of 2:16.66, lowering the previous mark of 2:16.70. He was behind Thailand's Radomyos Matjiur, who won in 2:14.83, and ahead of compatriot Christopher Cheong, who was third with a time of 2:16.99.
Quah's younger sister Jing Wen added a bronze in the 400m individual medley with a personal best time of 4:59.52 - on her SEA Games debut. Vietnam's Nguyen Thi Anh Vien dominated from start to finish to win in a Games record time of 4:42.88, ahead of Thailand's Pawapotako Phiangkhwan, who finished in 4:52.63.
Anh Vien also won the 800m free, making it two golds in two races.
