Singapore's petanque mixed doubles pair fail to qualify for semi-finals

SINGAPORE - Singapore's hopes of winning a mixed doubles petanque medal were dashed on Tuesday after the pair of Cheng Zhi Ming and Nur Izzati suffered a series of crushing defeats before they were eliminated in the preliminaries.

The duo failed to qualify for the semi-finals after two days of competition that saw them win two out of eight matches at the Padang.

Cheng, 20, and Izzati, 19, teamed up to beat Indonesia and the Philippines (both 13-6) but lost to Myanmar (2-13), Thailand (5-13), Malaysia (7-13), Laos (9-13), Cambodia (2-13) and Vietnam (5-13).

Anthony Ho, president of Sports Boules Singapore, said: "Zhi Ming is getting used to the atmosphere and environment but it's Izzati's first match and she is still tense.

"We're definitely disappointed that the other countries are performing better than us. We have to be consistent and relaxed."

The Singapore petanque team will now look to winning a medal in the men's doubles match on Wednesday which will feature Cheng Zhi Ming and Goh Wee Teck.
