Singapore fencers foil Vietnamese and Thai opposition to claim two more gold medals

SINGAPORE'S fencers emerged victorious in two more events at the South-east Asian Fencing Federation Junior & Cadet Championships in Brunei on Wednesday to take their gold haul up to double digits.

The fourth and final day of the team competition saw the Republic triumph in the women's foil and men's sabre events.

The quartet of Liane Wong, Thalia Lee, Lau Ysien and Nicole Wong beat Vietnam 45-35 in the foil final.

Team-mates Clive Leu, Choy Yu Yong, Jerrold Woo and Ryan Chong then edged out Thailand 45-43 in the sabre final.

Fencing Singapore's technical director Gabor Salamon said: "The results from the past few days clearly show that our young fencers are on track with their progress and that bodes well for the future as we move towards our Asian Games and Olympic Games targets in 2014 and 2016."

Singapore currently have 10 golds, four silvers and five bronzes to top the eight-country medal standings.

The individual events start tomorrow.
