Shooting: SEA Games squad, loaded with young talents, aim for six golds

Fielding one of the youngest line-ups in the SEA Games, the Singapore Shooting Association is aiming for six golds from the 26 events that they are entered for.

"Of course, we want all 26 golds but then shooting will be removed from the next SEA Games or Singapore will be banned from participating," said SSA president Michael Vaz jokingly.

Still, he has high hopes for the shooters whose qualification scores had to at least equal the 2013 Games' third-place score.

Although there are many debutants in the team, SSA high performance chief Soo Kwok Seng insists that all the shooters are expected to deliver and "no one is going to a major games just for experience".

An event to watch out for is the WA1500 Precision Pistol Competition, which made its debut at the 2005 Games but was left out of subsequent meets.

Vaz says home-ground advantage counts only up to a point.

"Playing on home ground could be both an advantage and a disadvantage; as shooting is largely a mental game, it depends on the player's mentality and reaction to the crowd."

The shooting events will be held at Yishun Safra and National Shooting Centre, and admission is free.
