SINGAPORE - Some 300 buses splashed with the SEA Games livery will be mobilised to transport athletes and officials around Singapore throughout the duration of the June 5-16 Singapore SEA Games.

In addition, various roads and expressways will be closed at certain points of the biennial meet for competitions such as cycling and marathon, as well as the opening and closing ceremonies.

At a media briefing on Wednesday, Toh Boon Yi, chief of corporate and community outreach of the Singapore SEA Games Organising Committee executive committee, said these closures and restrictions are in place to ensure the seamless running of events, and to ensure athletes and officials get to competition venues on time.

He encouraged all Singaporeans to be gracious hosts during the Games, which the Republic is hosting for the first time since 1993, saying motorists can help by giving way to the SEA Games buses or by planning their journeys ahead of time to avoid the closed roads.

Said Toh: "Our intention is to bring the Games to the people... that's why many of the Games' venues are in the city centre, such as Marina Bay cluster and the Kallang area. We are quite clear that there will be some inconveniences to the public and to motorists but we ask that every one be gracious and help us be a good host."
