SEA Games 2015: Singapore to be represented across all 36 sports in June

Team Singapore will be represented in all 36 sports when the SEA Games is hosted here from June 5-16 after the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) selection committee approved on Monday a provisional list of athletes for the biennial event.

A total of 950 athletes made the first cut, although this number will be further trimmed down in the entry-by-name process deadline on April 15. National sports associations (NSAs) are required to decide on the actual athletes competing in specific events by then.

It remains to be seen what the final number of athletes representing Singapore at the Games will be, but SNOC secretary general Chris Chan said it is very likely the contingent will be Singapore's biggest yet at the SEA Games.

The previous high was at the 1993 Games on home soil, when 483 athletes represented the Republic to compete across 29 sports.

Said Chan: "The SNOC selection committee took a slightly different approach today to be more extensive in the benchmark margin without compromising the standards of the contingent. As Singapore is hosting the SEA Games this year, we want to allow the athletes who look forward to fly the Singapore flag high in front of the home supporters."

The June 5-16 Games is the first time that the Republic is hosting the SEA Games since 1993. Singapore won 50 gold medals that year and it remains the country's record haul at the multi-sport event.
