School Sports: SRJC, JJC claim first overall titles in taekwondo

New champions emerged at the Schools National A Division Taekwondo Championships held at Toa Payoh Sports Hall on Thursday.

Serangoon Junior College (SRJC) won the girls' title, their first ever overall title, while Jurong Junior College (JJC) picked up their first boys' title.

JJC had finished level with favourites Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) with 60 points apiece, but were crowned champions by virtue of their four golds to HCI's two. Justin Khoo was the most bemedalled athlete for JJC, winning the blue belt and green belt individual golds in addition to the blue belt team gold.

"We went out there not to compete against others, as our coach always reminds us that our real competitors are ourselves, so we just gave it our best shot," said JJC captain Daryl Gan, 18.

The B and C Division championships were held from Monday to Wednesday, with Springfield Secondary School winning the B and C Division boys' and B Division girls' trophies. The C Division Girls' title was won by Bowen Secondary School.
