School sports: Sean, Sze En lead the way in B Division artistic gymnastics championships

IT WAS business as usual at the Schools National B Division Artistic Gymnastics Individual Championships at Bishan Sports Hall on Friday, with the heavy favourites dominating the podium positions.

Sean Yeo of the Singapore Sports School (SSP) clinched gold in three out of four of his events (vault, pommel horse, floor exercise). Crowned the individual all-around champion a day earlier, he was denied a clean sweep only in the parallel bars, where he had to settle for silver behind Christopher Chew of St Joseph's Institution (International).

It was a remarkable comeback for Sean, who had to sit out the tournament last year because he was injured.

There was also a comeback story in the girls' competition. Raffles Girls' School (RGS) Tan Sze En, 15, still managed to clinch the overall title despite falling during her uneven bars routine. Fortunately, she managed to steady her nerves in time to shine in her final two disciplines - the beam and floor exercise - eventually clinching three out of four golds as well.
