School Sports: SEA Games-bound fencer Choy Yu Yong clinches A Division sabre title

Hwa Chong Institution's (HCI) Choy Yu Yong came from behind to defeat Innova Junior College's Tan Yuefeng to clinch the Schools National A Division Fencing Championships boys' sabre event at Singapore Sports School on Thursday.

Yu Yong, who is set to represent Singapore in June's SEA Games, trailed Yuefeng 3-6 in the final, but equalised at 9-9 before clinching the title.

Said Yu Yong: "I focused on my more confident moves, the ones I practised most often during training, and avoided the flashy moves which were more difficult to execute."

He will head off to Hungary this Saturday for national team training, in hopes for a podium finish at his debut SEA Games.

At the boys' epee event, dark horse Hun Jean Luc from Tampines Junior College (TPJC) finished a surprised second after narrowly beating Nigel Sim from HCI in the semi-finals with a close score of 15-13.

This is the first time which Jean has participated in an epee event as his pet event is the foil, which he will be competing tomorrow.

A Division - boys' epee: 1 Justin Lim (HCI) 2 Hun Jean Luc (TPJC). Boys' sabre: 1 Choy Yu Yong (HCI) 2 Tan Yuefeng (IJC). Girls' foil: 1 Chloe Wong (RI) 2 Rachel Yu Wing (CJC).
