School sports: RGS end MGS' five-year reign with 3-2 win in B Div tennis final

SINGAPORE - The first schools national champions of the 2016 season were crowned on Monday morning at Kallang Tennis Centre.

Raffles Girls' School dethroned five-time defending champions Methodist Girls School, beating their rivals 3-2 to capture their first Schools National B Division girls' tennis title since 2010.

In the boys' B Division, Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) comfortably retained their national title with a 5-0 rout of ACS (Barker Road).

The girls' final was locked at 2-2, with RGS earning points in the singles through Tammy Tan, who beat Zhang Hanyu 6-1, 6-1, and Meg Ang, who beat Tamara Tan 6-2, 6-4.

MGS levelled the scores thanks to Elizabeth Lee/Chelsea Wee's 6-3, 6-2 victory in the doubles over Laura Ann Chan/Sin Su-Wen and Nadine Loh, who beat Tessa Wong 6-1, 6-3.

In the decisive second doubles, Jeovanne Poernomo and Shirina Mulani held their nerves to beat Natasha Loh and Emma Collins 6-4, 6-4, giving RGS the overall victory.

In the boys final, ACS (I), led by Singapore Tennis Association's top-ranked Under-16 player Shawn Ng, clinched their third title in four years with a straightforward win over ACS (Barker).

Both finals were postponed from last Friday due to rain.
