SINGAPORE - Togawa Mei of Nanyang Girls' High School (NYGH) dominated the final day of the National Inter-school Artistic Gymnastics Championship 2016, winning gold in all four events and coming in second in the individual all-around event in the B division category.

"I trained nearly every day for this competition , so it feels like my effort really paid off," said the 15-year-old.

"On the first day, I fell during the vault and balance beam events. But I persevered and tried to do better on the second day and I didn't fall."

Beating Togawa to the individual all-around gold was her friend and training partner at the Prime Gynamstics Club, Tan Sze En. Even though the Raffles Girls' School (RGS) student withdrew from the second day of competition to avoid aggravating her injuries, her scores in the preliminary round were enough to help her retain her all-around title from last year.

"I feel happy that I helped my school win a medal," said Sze En, who will be representing Singapore at the Pacific Rim Gymnastics Championships in Everett, Washington next week.

In the B division boys' category, Chong Jer Rong of Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) won the individual all around event thanks to his gold-winning performances in the parallel bars, high bar and rings.

"I enjoy gymnastics a lot, so I naturally want to work harder for it. I'm not working towards medals, but to improve myself," he said.

In the A Division Boys, Ryan Lee of Catholic Junior College (CJC) took the individual all-around title as well as first place finishes in the parallel bars, high bar and rings.

"I didn't expect to do as well as I did, because my competitors are all very strong and the competition was quite close," the 17-year-old told The Straits Times.

The A Division Girls category was not contested due to insufficient participants.
