Meridian Junior College's girls team and Raffles Institution's boys team finished triumphant in the National Inter-School A division Floorball Championships at Yishun Sports Hall on Thursday.

Meridian bagged their sixth title since 2007 when they beat River Valley High School 6-1 in a match they dominated from start to end.

Adeena Mohamed Nagib, 17, drew first blood in the very first minute and converted a penalty shot in the 15th minute for Meridian who ended the first period of the final with a convincing 4-1 lead.

"We made a lot of mistakes last year but we decided to play as a team instead of depending on individual skills this time," she said, referring to their defeat by Yishun Junior College in the last championships.

Said Meridian coach Filip Dahlgren: "The goal was to win back the gold we lost last year and I'm very pleased with the results. The girls played like a machine."

The RI boys showed similar determination in defending their title, beating Victoria Junior College (VJC) 4-2.

"We were not certain of winning today but we had to trust in each other," said RI captain Muhammad Amirul Afiq Bakthiar, 18.

The team had reviewed video footage of their match with VJC in the preliminary rounds that ended 1-1.

"Our coach managed to think of a very good tactical change, which is to hold back and focus on counter-attacks instead," said attacker Tng Zong Wei, 17.
