Schooling scores a butterfly double

Joseph Schooling's fine start to the year continued as he claimed two individual wins at the Arizona State University v Texas meet on Friday.

The 22-year-old Singaporean and Olympic 100m butterfly champion was victorious in the 100-yard and 200-yard fly events at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Centre.

In the shorter race, Schooling, who is a senior at the University of Texas, clocked 47.37 seconds to finish ahead of Arizona's Andrew Porter (47.71sec) and Patrick Park (48.37sec).

He also won the 200-yd event in 1min 44.48sec, ahead of Park (1:47.01) and UT's Sam Pomajevich (1:49.78).

While his times were slower than his personal bests (43.75sec and 1:37.97 respectively), they will serve as a confidence boost for Schooling as he prepares for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championships from March 21-24 in Minneapolis.

It will be his last NCAA outing, after which he will turn professional.

He won the 100-yd and 200-yd events at the NCAA meet in 2015 and 2016 but did not win an individual gold medal at last year's competition.

Earlier this month, in his first competitive outing of 2018, Schooling won the 100-yd and 200-yd events at the Texas v Auburn meet at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Centre.

Schooling has opted to focus on the NCAA and will not compete at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in April.

Fellow US-based Singaporean swimmers Quah Zheng Wen and his sister Jing Wen will also skip the Commonwealth Games.

Schooling's other major competition will be September's Asian Games in Indonesia, where he is aiming to win three golds.

At the previous Asiad in Glasgow, he won a gold (100m fly), silver (50m fly) and bronze (200m fly) medal.

He claimed a bronze in the 100m fly at last year's Fina World Championships in Budapest.
