School sports: SEA Games-bound Tong Kah Mun dominant in winning A Division title

Despite suffering an achilles tendon sprain on Monday, SEA Games-bound gymnast Tong Kah Mun from Nanyang Junior College did not disappoint at the Schools National Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships at Bishan Sports Hall on Friday.

The 17-year-old emerged A Division individual all-around champion, winning all her apparatus events and finishing with a score of 55.785, well ahead of Raffles Institution's Chia Shing Leng (32.535) and Catholic JC's Pon Swee Man (28.685).

It was not always smooth-sailing however, as Kah Mun dropped her apparatus in both the hoops and clubs events, and limped off the mat after the first routine, clutching her right ankle in pain.

Even so, she remained unfazed. "I told myself to not be anxious or dwell on it, but focus on executing the following routines well," she said.

In the C division, twins Phebe and Michele Lau did the Singapore Sports School proud by clinching first and second respectively in the individual all around.

Overall champions - A Division: Tong Kah Mun (individual all-around, hoop, clubs, ball and ribbon). B Division: Lyn Yeo (hoop, clubs, ball and rope), Raffles Girls' School (divisional champions) C Division: Phebe Lau (all around, ball, clubs), Avryl Tan (hoop), Michele Lau (Rope), RGS (divisional champions).
