Rugby: Top-six hopes dashed after Singapore lose to China and Hong Kong

Singapore's hopes of finishing among the top six nations in the Singapore leg of HSBC Asian rugby sevens series were dashed after two defeats on Saturday.

After losing to China 14-24 in their first match, Singapore suffered a 0-36 defeat by pre-tournament favourites Hong Kong at Yio Chu Kang stadium.

Hong Kong, winners of the last leg in India, were rampant from the start, scoring three tries and one conversion to lead 17-0 after the first half. There was no reprieve for the hosts in the second-half, as Hong Kong scored another three tries and converted twice.

The two losses meant Singapore finish bottom of Pool A, and will advance to the bowl competition to be played on Sunday. A ninth-placed finish in the 12-team tournament is the best outcome for the hosts.
