OTTAWA (AFP) - Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper aimed to collect on Friday on a wager for beer with US President Barack Obama after Canada's women's and men's Olympic ice hockey teams beat US squads.

"Like I said, team USA is good but we are winter," Harper said in a Twitter posting. "I look forward to my two cases of beer." Canada defeated the US men 1-0 in the Sochi Olympic men's semi-finals, advancing to Sunday's final against Sweden in a tournament filled with stars from the National Hockey League.

"That is a shame," White House press secretary Jay Carney commented after learning the final score.

"Congratulations to Canada, they certainly know their way around a hockey rink," he added.

On Thursday, Canada's women snatched gold from the United States in a 3-2 victory. The American women had held a 2-0 lead until minutes before the end of regulation time and then lost in sudden-death over-time.

The victory produced the fourth Olympic gold in 16 years for the Canadian women and another disappointment for the Americans, particularly Julie Chu, who turns 32 next month, and is the only player to have also worn a US jersey at the 2010, 2006 and 2002 Olympics.

After the Canadian women's victory, the daily National Post resurrected a 2006 editorial cartoon depicting the coach of the Canadian men's team telling his players to "Play like girls." The US and Canadian leaders had sealed their bet on Wednesday when they met for a North American leaders summit in Mexico.

It was not the first time the two men had wagered beer over hockey, and not the first time Obama has lost.

The president sent Harper a case of American Yuengling beer after Canada's men defeated the United States in an over-time thriller at in the 2010 Vancouver Olympic final.

Then-White House press secretary Robert Gibbs had to appear at his podium wearing a Canadian national jersey after losing a bet to his counterpart in Ottawa.
